Aikido does not involve competition, so other factors are considered when ranking students. The points of evaluation involve execution of technique, but they also involve one's ability to cooperate and communicate with other students during practice and one' attitude toward practice. Points of evaluation include:

  • Understanding of the basic techniques appropriate for the testing level.
  • Spontaneous movement and response appropriate to the attack.
  • Ability to adapt movement to the force of the attack.
  • Concentration and awareness.
  • Continuity of movement (as opposed to speed).
  • Confidence.
  • Competence at Ukeme (recipient of the technique).
